Downfall (Korean: 창; RR: Chang) is a 1997 South Korean film by Im Kwon-taek. The story revolves around an orphan girl who is forced into prostitution, finds love with one of her clients, but finds it impossible to break free of the pimps and procurers exploiting her.
A young woman is forced into prostitution after being tricked into thinking she’d work as a beverage seller. She’s an orphan who has never known love in her life, and seeks a man who will love her unconditionally. She soon learns about the flesh trade, first as a novice hooker then as a veteran who hooks up with men who eventually dump her because of her past.
The movie is a journey into Korean prostitution from the 1970s to the 1990s, and the director does a good job by not making the movie overly sentimental. Prostitution still holds a major role in Korean society, with an estimated 20 percent of Korean women having held jobs in the “men’s entertainment industry.
Young-Eun has sold her body since she arrived at the brothel at the age of 17. She’s now a middle aged woman. Although it was difficult to adjust, she learned the ropes and is now earning money. She is so used to the lifestyle that she can’t imagine getting out of it. A kind man, Kil-Lyeung, comes along and reminds her of her warm-hearted mother. He can’t change the way Young-Eun lives, but he remains a true friend to her. Time passes and the two have their own lives. The two meet again after a long time, and they realize in their hearts that they belong together

n the late 70s, Young-eun (Shin Eun-kyung), who lived in the countryside at the age of seventeen, started his life in Seoul at the Cheonggyecheon cloth factory, but moved to a bar where he could make more money. But there are no bars that can only sell alcohol, and once you come in, you can’t get out.
Since the industrialization of the 70s, the prostitution industry has undergone a change in politics and economic shifts and transitions. In the meantime, Young-eun loses loved ones and earns money instead of being deceived. Her only wish is to see the buckwheat field of her old hometown.
This film depicts the life story of a woman who entered the red light district in the late 1970s and wandered about 20 years until the 90s. Director Lim Kwon-taek, who has established himself as a national director through , caught the megaphone, and Shin Eun-kyung’s unconventional acting transformation brought a buzz at the time of production.
Chae-young, a 17-year-old girl who holds only a vague memory of her hometown, seems to be a longing for lost innocence. She dreams of going back to her hometown for a while, with her brothels and shabby pubs. It looks like a folding screen. In order to recreate the 70’s brothel, he made a large-scale open set on the wall of Gyeonggi-do, and filmed the movie.
